Skeleton plan concerning the development of the tourism industry in Berlin, Treptow-Köpenick
In 2005, 6.5 million visitors came to Berlin. This means a total of 14.6 million overnight stays in the 580 different lodging locations. For the first time, the number of foreign guests equalled to almost two million who spent more than five million nights in Berlin. Thus, the total of 84,328 beds reached a capacity limit of 48.8 %.
The district Treptow-Köpenick, as an intersection between this growing metropolis and the spacious Mark Brandenburg area, also profits from the capital’s positive development tendencies. In 2006 a total of 213,050 guests decided to visit Berlin’s largest district which amounted to 451,863 overnight stays. The average stay was 2.13 days, the beds reached a capacity limit of 37%. Thus, Treptow-Köpenick attracted 3.24 % of Berlin-visitors and the percentage of foreign guests with overnight stays was raised by 25%.
In comparison to Berlin’s other districts, Treptow-Köpenick is only number 9 of the 12 districts concerning overnight stays. This result does not comply with the district’s potential by far. Treptow-Köpenick is supposed to once again become one of the big touristic labels in the Berlin-Brandenburg area. In order to reach this ambitious intention, the “Tourismusverein” Berlin Treptow-Köpenick began an annual EU-project in co-operation with the district authority Treptow-Köpenick in September 2006.
Within this plan, the analysis, plans, finance and transformation concepts will be developed which makes our target much easier to reach. Thereby, the development of touristic focuses should be accelerated and ways should be paved for potential investments. Close co-operation of public and private economy is essential and is very much activated by this project.
The following assignments will be converted:
- Revision of responsibility assignment and role allocation concerning the promotion of tourism
- Development of a concept for a enduring financial support of tourism development
- Intermediate-term planning of development and marketing focuses within the district
- Revision of the basis of tourism marketing
- Development of planning measures of touristic focuses
- Co-operation concept for Berlin and its districts
The European Union and Berlin authorities co-finance this plan within the scope of the European Fund for regional development
