Nothing has made Köpenick as famous as the Köpenickiade, the legendary prank of the shoemaker Wilhelm Voigt.
“Die Uniform verschafft Respekt, ganz gleich, wer auch darinnen steckt” this was the case in the Kingdom of Prussia at the turn of the century…
and so Wilhelm Voigt took a group of ten soldiers of the Berlin garrison under his command on 16 October 1906…because a used captain’s uniform gave him authority. He had the town hall of Köpenick occupied, arrested the mayor, “confiscated” the town treasury and disappeared with it. The whole world laughed.
The exhibitions in the town hall:
In 2016 a new exhibition was opened in the town hall of Köpenick:“The Captain of Köpenick – from convict to legend”. At the scene of the world-famous raid, visitors can now learn about Wilhelm Voigt and the Köpenickiade of 1906.
